Just Die, Okay?

Yeah, it is Sine Die, but this year has been such a weird session that some are wishing the majority of the politicians would just die along with the session. In some ways it was a good session, only about half the number of bills passed this year and the fewer the laws the better we like it.

We got to see the Legislature and the Governor butting heads and a healthy tension is a good thing in a legislature. Stitt whipped out his veto pen for nineteen bills, five of them were Speaker McCall's bills and they received a lot of support from both sides of the aisles. A good number of the vetoed bills were over ridden including the main budget bill.

Some whined about the lack of coordination between Stitt and the legislative leaders and yeah it was weird seeing Republicans holding a majority in all chambers and state wide offices and still seeing some head butting. But weird in a healthy way actually.

Stitt's choice of liaison was the root of most of the problems, we covered that last week. The Wuhan Flu helped things stay weird for sure. Not sure if it stopped the pow wows by the big chiefs but it certainly made us think of things that were more important than another new law clogging up the books.

And in the end the session ended without major tax increases or fee increases despite horrendous revenue failures and pandemic costs. The agency cuts could have been better managed, more targeted rather than across the board cuts. And nowhere to be seen are the audits promised during the campaign but next session the revenue will likely still be struggling and perhaps that will help get them done.
