Kill the Mother If the Baby Might Survive

Abolitionists Attempt to Remove a Mother's Right to Self Defense

Radical abolitionists have pushed Senator Joseph Silk to file a radical anti abortion bill, SB 13 which can send people to life in prison for participating in an abortion. The bill has no provision for medical necessity to save the life of the mother, instead preferring to prosecute both doctor and mother as murderers should a medically required abortion occur. A tubal pregnancy is one example, that is an embryo that has taken hold outside of the womb, resulting in the destruction of the reproductive organs and even in the death of the woman.

Even Ronald Reagan had set aside self defense as an exemption for abortion. It isn't that the woman doesn't want to have the child, it is that if she does so she risks her life. Shouldn't her husband and existing children have the right to decide if mom survives or is a tubal pregnancy or any of a host of other reasons for a medical emergency the right thing to preserve?

Regan did a magnificent job of explaining why he chose self defense for a mother as an abortion exception:

"My answer as to what kind of abortion bill I could sign was one that recognized an abortion is the taking of a human life. … Therefore, an abortion is justified when done in self-defense. My belief is that a woman has the right to protect her own life and health against even her own unborn child. I believe also that just as she has the right to defend herself against rape, she should not be made to bear a child resulting from the violation of her person and therefore abortion is an act of self-defense.
I know there will be disagreements with this view, but I can find no evidence whatsoever that a fetus is not a living human being with human rights."

Radical abolitionists like LeLayne Tapp-Smith say on Facebook that no, there is never a reason to abort a fetus:

"....and treat both mother and baby as equal patients, or attempt to transfer the baby to the uterus to give the chance of the baby attaching to the uterine wall. I will repeat, there is never a reason to actively seek to terminate the life (murder) of the baby. "

The idea of transferring a fetus is fraught with risk of introducing birth defects and so is treating the baby as a co equal to the mother. Women that have to go through a tubal pregnancy are already grieving over the loss of the child and do not need the threat of prosecution for murder added to their load. A Facebook poll on a page frequented by conservative Republicans favored the mother's right of self defense over risking her life by about 250%.

A tubal pregnancy always results in the tube erupting and the baby dying. By that time the reproductive damage is done and the risk to the mother skyrockets. If the mother survives, her chance of becoming pregnant again is cut by 50% as she will drop eggs once every two months instead of once a month. And tubal pregnancies are not uncommon with some sources claiming one out of fifty to one out of eighty pregnancies being a tubal pregnancy.

And keep in mind that these are the same radicals that advocated charging women who miscarry with murder, actually asking that a law be passed that would refer miscarriages to the local District Attorney.

The Pro Life movement is adamantly against this abolitionist movement as they say it sets the movement back twenty years by making Pro Life supporters look crazy and unreasonable. The simple facts are yes, abortion is murder, but yes, there have to be exceptions because life itself is messy and there are consequences to laws that might not be intended.

Silk's bill appears to be stopped over at the Senate for now. Senator Smalley, the committee chairman and Pro Tem Treat have both spoken out against the bill and agree that it would harm the Pro Life movement and likely cause an increase in abortions due to public opinion turning against the Pro Life supporters.  One thing is for certian, there are far better bills in the process that can be passed, will pass legal challenge, and actually do something besides drive a political career of the likes of Taliban Dan Fisher.
